12:30pm
DoubleTree Hotel
215 S Illinois Ave
Oak Ridge, TN 37830
Holiday Luncheon.
Speaker: Dr. Jon Shefner, Professor and Head of the Department of Sociology, UTK.
Topic: "The Seeming Inevitability of Austerity in the U.S.", from Dr. Shefner's new book Why Austerity Persists.
Austerity is a set of political-economic policies (spending cuts, tax increases) to reduce government budgets that, in turn, have created a host of economic problems across the globe. These policies have persisted despite evidence that they do not work; have evolved over the last 45 years; and have positively impacted powerful people and institutions at the adverse cost to others. In Tennessee, for example, we have austerity policies in place but Tennessee is also near the bottom of every list measuring health care, poverty, education, opioid usage, etc. among the fifty states.
