Lunch with the League. Speaker: Denise Kiernan. Topic: "The Girls of Atomic City: The Untold Story of the Women Who Helped Win World War II." Ms. Kiernan's book was published March 5, 2013, by Simon & Schuster. "The Girls of Atomic City" is the true story of the young women during World War II who lived and worked in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, one of the Manhattan Project's secret cities. Though their efforts were crucial to the development of the world's first atomic bomb, the vast majority of Oak Ridge residents did not know what they were working on until the atomic bomb known as "Little Boy" detonated above Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. The public is invited, and no reservations are necessary. Lunches are available on a first-come basis for $7, or you may bring your own lunch. The American Museum of Science and Energy Discovery Shop will provide copies of Ms. Kiernan's book for those wishing to purchase a copy.
