Making Democracy Work

Make Democracy Work!

The League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge, a nonpartisan political organization for men and women, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League neither supports nor opposes any candidate, party, or political appointee.

The League works to bring about constructive change by

  • registering voters and defending voting rights.
  • informing citizens about their rights and responsibilities.
  • informing the public through our in-depth issue analyses.
  • sponsoring candidate debates and public issue forums.
  • taking action through lobbying for change.

Election News is Up and Operating!, an online voter information guide, is available to Oak Ridgers. VOTE411 began in 2006 at the national league level, and now has nearly 300 local leagues participating. To use it, simply log on to, and follow the instructions. The site uses GIS data from the U.S. Census Bureau and State Comptroller's Office to identify your voting district from the address you enter. Therefore, the races you see should be only those pertaining to our district. Please know that the information you provide and selections you make while using the site aren't being collected or retained.

Invitations to participate have been sent to the candidates. These invitations included a link for the candidate to attach a photo, update personal information, and respond to several questions, submitted by LWVOR members, pertaining to the office they are pursuing. By reading these responses, voters can see where each candidate stands on these pertinent issues.

Over the next few weeks, I will be following up with candidates who have not responded, perhaps because their email address is incorrect in our database. So, if you know the email address of a candidate who has not responded, please send it to, and I'll be sure they receive an invitation.

Please try the site out for yourself.
